The equipment finance technology market has undergone a linguistic event: everything is now AI. The document platform is AI-powered. The scorecard vendor has an AI roadmap. The servicing system’s new module is intelligent. Some of these claims describe genuine machine-learning capability with measurable lift; others describe rules engines wearing this year’s adjective; and the demo — polished, rehearsed, run on curated examples — is constitutionally incapable of telling a buyer which is which. The industry is entering its largest technology procurement wave in a generation with a vocabulary that has stopped discriminating, and the cost of the confusion will be paid in three-year contracts.
The corrective is not technical expertise the industry lacks; it is diligence discipline the industry already owns, aimed at a new asset class. Seven questions, asked in order and pressed to specific answers, sort the market more reliably than any bake-off — and the vendors’ comfort with the questions is itself among the most informative data the process produces.
