Winning When You’re 40 Basis Points High and Everyone Knows It

Losing on rate is almost always a value problem wearing a price costume. Buyers pay up for confidence the deal closes, expertise in their industry, ease of doing business, and speed—and the winning mix looks different for a $6 million middle market deal than for a $90,000 vendor approval.

  • Being the high-rate lender is only fatal when you have nothing to offer beyond price.
  • Buyers cite rate because it is the one number easy to compare; they decide on confidence, expertise, ease of doing business, and speed.
  • The middle market recovers the delta through credibility and structure; vendor and small-ticket recover it through approval certainty and a fast, simple yes.
  • In a Secured Research survey, 46% of middle market borrowers ranked confidence in the lender and speed of execution above rate as the deciding factor in their most recent equipment financing decision.

It is also, most of the time, incomplete. Buyers who choose a higher-cost lender do it constantly, and they do not do it by accident.
