What Two Trucking CFOs Think About TRAC Leases as a Potential Solution

As the trucking industry grapples with economic uncertainties, the significance of TRAC leasing through lenders outside the traditional bank revolver group has never been more pronounced. With margins under pressure, equipment costs and secondary market values fluctuating and banks tightening their working capital due to their own liquidity challenges, TRAC leasing offers a strategic financial lifeline for trucking companies.

The CFO of a large Midwest-based refrigerated carrier highlights the critical role TRAC leases play in navigating these economic hurdles:

“With interest rates soaring and equipment costs remaining elevated, TRAC leases have become a critical financial tool for us. These leases allow us to manage our cash flow more effectively, as they offer lower monthly payments compared to traditional loans. In an environment where margins are compressed and banks are more conservative in extending capital, TRAC leases provide the flexibility we need to maintain and hedge the impact of higher capital costs. This arrangement also helps us mitigate the financial risk associated with fluctuating asset values, ensuring that we can adapt to market changes more efficiently.”

The current economic landscape has made traditional financing from their bank group less viable for many trucking companies. Banks are increasingly focused on their liquidity challenges, making it harder for companies to secure the capital beyond the revolver to invest in new equipment. In this context, TRAC leases through non-bank lenders or lenders not in their bank group become a powerful solution to manage this exposure risk.

The CFO of a national specialized carrier echoes this sentiment, underscoring the strategic advantages of TRAC leases:

“These leases enable us to realize an implicit rate comparable to what we’ve experienced in better economic times. We lose some of the depreciation benefits and gain on sale opportunities that were once institutionalized around here, but those are likely gone for the foreseeable future anyway. I’ve got NOLs chewing up depreciation. By utilizing TRAC leases, we can continue to invest in modern, fuel-efficient trucks without straining our cash reserves or taking on excessive debt. This allows us to protect working capital and invest in new equipment without damaging delicate bank relationships.”

Structure Matters

The importance of TRAC leasing — or most any type of equipment finance structure alternative to loans — through non-bank lenders or lenders outside the bank group is a growing interest in an economy where margins are tight, equipment costs are high and traditional bank financing is harder to secure. By offering flexibility, preserving liquidity and mitigating financial risks, TRAC leases and the structural alternatives provide a crucial pathway for trucking companies to navigate economic volatility and sustain their growth and operations.
